Early Life:
Denisha Gray is an entrepreneur, business owner, and motivational speaker. She is the founder of Gray Financial and co-owner of TranspoCFO. Denisha was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, where she played basketball for most of her high school years. Denisha attended Fort Wayne College on a basketball and academic scholarship, earning dual bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Marketing.
After graduating from college, Denisha began to work but soon realized that she wanted to play more basketball. Her boss at the time encouraged her to start playing, and she ended up being a semi-pro ball player. She even played basketball overseas in Sweden for half a season until her father and grandfather both died. When she returned from overseas, she was offered four different contracts to play basketball. However, she chose not to pursue a career in basketball after feeling it was a dead end. She moved on to other opportunities.
Denisha’s first job was in human resources at Home Depot, where she worked for four months. After this stint, she got her first corporate accounting job at assurance and did that for two years. From this position, she became interested in taxes. Subsequently, Denisha worked for several other firms as an accountant and CFO to gain the experience necessary for owning a business. She says she was a sponge, soaking up opportunities and learning from them.
In the past six years, Denisha has worked hard to grow Gray Financial into a full-service accounting firm. In 2021, DeNisha became Co-Owner and CFO of TranspoCFO, which specializes in transportation industry accounting.
Interaction with TN’H:
Denisha’s wit and ambition were fully displayed during her interview with Truck N Hustle. She began by explaining what bookkeeping and CFOs do in order for her audience members who are not familiar with these terms or careers path. She also stressed how she had worked hard for her own business before getting this position by building up from nothing when starting herself rather than depending on someone else.
For trucking business owners, Denisha gave them insight into the importance of maintaining accounts and hiring a CFO firm. She says 85% fail because they don’t understand the financing skills required to run an efficient company properly; this includes accounting and taxes.
In the interview, Denisha also revealed how much money a trucking company makes in a year—from small to large. Having worked with many trucking companies as their CFO, Denisha developed a skill where she can see red flags, inefficiencies, or warning signs of financial trouble for clients. She shares these insights during interviews to help you avoid pitfalls and count your chickens before they hatch (so to speak). If so, don’t miss her podcast.
Final Thought:
This is probably the simplest final thought in Truck N Hustle— Densiha says, “Numbers don’t lie. 85% of the trucking companies fail within the first year.” So, if you want to succeed, make sure you put an accountant on your team.”
