Carriers don't order trucks when they're scared. So a big jump in Class 8 orders is worth a look. According to ACT Research, North American Class 8 orders hit 26,576 units in May, up 104% from a year ago and 12% from April.
Two things are driving it. The first is genuine: improving freight conditions and stronger rates make fleets more willing to invest in equipment. The second is strategic: EPA 2027 is coming, and the new emissions rules are expected to raise the cost of a truck meaningfully. A lot of carriers would rather buy now, under the current rules, than pay the 2027 premium.
For an owner-operator, this is a useful market read in both directions. The order surge signals that operators with capital see a better cycle ahead — but it also means a wave of pre-buy is pulling demand forward, which can affect used-truck values and capacity down the line. If you're planning an equipment move, the 2027 deadline is now a real variable in the timing, not just background noise.
